It can still be an important game to anyone wants to get excited for it, but nobody should ever have to force the idea of a rivalry on a large proportion of fellow fans. Other people can think differently all they want. It died when the teams stopped playing each other. I don't care about the "tradition" of it, and I'm not going to pretend I will because tradition only matters if it is kept alive. I would care a hell of a lot more about giving up games against OSU, Michigan, and Michigan State than I ever will about the games against Pitt because that is what my formative years following the sport revolved around. And it's not a dis against pitt when I say that, it's just how I, and a lot of other PSU fans, feel about a matchup that was never a rivalry in my personal experience, and with the next break, likely never will be in the next 20 years. And there are plenty of other PSU fans that feel the same way. I wasn't involved in the fanbase before the break period. I hate to be that guy, but I couldn't care less about PSU playing Pitt. If the Big 10 were to drop back to an 8 game conference schedule I'd be more open to it. We have Virginia Tech, Auburn and West Virginia on upcoming schedules and none of those matchups would be happening if we played Pitt every year. I for one would much rather see PSU schedule rotating P5 nonconference teams from around the country. It's not a close comparison at all, PSU has little to gain from the game and it hinders other scheduling options.

Compare that to PSU having fourteen 10 win seasons and finishing ranked 22 times during the same time period. I know people like to say it's rivalry talk when PSU fans look down on Pitt but they have had one 10 win season and finished ranked 6 times since the early 80s. In an era when teams basically only want one P5 nonconference opponent on the schedule in order to maximize playoff chances PSU would never have the opportunity to play any other P5 programs ever again without a really tough schedule and putting themselves at a disadvantage.Īdd in the fact that Pitt football isn't what it was back in the heyday of the rivalry and it just doesn't make a lot of sense. Locking in an annual home and home with a nonconference opponent, while at the same time playing a 9 game conference slate and having an AD that insists on 7 home games per year makes this more difficult. My vote would be Pitt but it looks like thats officially off the table. To be honest, it would be nice to have an intense rivalry with an extreme amount of hate, like OSU/UM Texas/Oklahoma etc. Not a rival, just usually always our toughest opponent so naturally we get the rowdiest for it but somehow they can't comprehend that. Not to mention the sting of when we beat you and won the big 10 and you still got in. They think we want to be their rivals because of this but we in reality we want to beat your skulls in and get into the playoff. Its because in recent history we have been fighting hard to make it out of the East and its always very close and they're usually the gate keeper. Ohio State on the other hand you can feel hate between the fans. Fan bases honestly can get along fairly easily too. Yea Michigan is a storied program and the games are big but it doesn't feel like a rivalry nowadays. First thing you'll hear at school is "It's (insert time of day) and Michigan still sucks". A lot of the student body is NJ/MD kids who fled those states for school so its more of a have fun, care free, see your friends from home vibe when we play.įinally, Michigan and OSU.

We actually enjoy playing because we know we'll win. I know Rutgers and Maryland keep trying to make it happen, but to be honest we genuinely 100% don't care about either school in a rivalry manner. You can feel the hatred when these two schools meet anywhere, it feels personal. I won't say they're our rivals, because it's lopsided and we don't play them regularly, but it felt like it. But is it true?Īt school, I always felt a real rivalry with Pitt. As a school, we have fully bought into the mentality we have zero rivals. If you are a PSU fan or go to/attended the school, you will see "Unrivaled" shirts everywhere in the bookstore, downtown, and on gamedays.
